Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has won a defamation lawsuit against former Ghanaian Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong in the United States.
A jury in the Essex County Superior Court in New Jersey ruled in favor of Anas, awarding him $18 million in damages.
The lawsuit, filed on May 17, 2022, alleged that Agyapong and media personality Frederick Asamoah made defamatory remarks during an episode of The Daddy Fred Show, an online program popular among Ghanaians in the U.S.
Agyapong was accused of making false and damaging claims, including allegations that Anas was a criminal, a thief, and responsible for the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.
This ruling contrasts with previous legal proceedings in Ghana, where Anas’s defamation case against Agyapong was dismissed by the Accra High Court on March 15, 2023. The Supreme Court of Ghana later upheld this dismissal on February 28, 2024.
The U.S. court's verdict represents a significant legal victory for Anas, underscoring the differing judicial outcomes between the two countries.
