A government advisory team conducting a fact-finding mission on the effects of illegal mining (galamsey) encountered strong resistance in parts of the Western and Central regions while disabling and confiscating equipment.

The operation, intended to combat environmental degradation, triggered fierce opposition from illegal miners and some officials of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The team, which has been touring severely impacted areas, took firm action by confiscating pumping machines, generators, and excavators while dismantling Changfan machines at galamsey sites in Anwia (near Nkroful), Prestea, and Dunkwa.

However, tensions flared in Dunkwa when miners, led by the NDC Constituency Chairman, mobilized to challenge the team. Supported by outraged miners and residents, the NDC official protested that he had not been consulted before the operation.

The protesters, many of them actively engaged in illegal mining along the Offin River, blocked roads and threatened a direct confrontation with the heavily armed security personnel escorting the team.
